Dead Coconuts

Not the ones that succumbed to lethal yellowing in the 1970’s, but the bar/nightclub at CityWalk that Steph worked on. Friday night, we decided to see for ourselves. First up, $32 parking in the garage (remember Cat in the Hat section, row 659 so we can find our truck), then a long walk, escalators, security (thank goodness not sensitive enough to catch Grant’s large pocket knife; one wonders what other tools/weapons are let in), moving sidewalks, then we have arrived. Early, 5:54 PM.

I ordered the Nu Brew (Old Forester bourbon, lime juice, black currant syrup and ginger beer), 20 oz souvenir cup, $18. Grant stuck with tried and true Crooked Can Bügermeister Ocktoberfest, 18 oz, $13. Both good.

While he sat, I wandered and wondered. It was definitely dark with lots of black light. Music wasn’t deafening and a wide range of tunes. Obviously a dance floor for the later hours. Upstairs was another bar. Lots of portraits of women. Seemed like a sorority was having a party. Pizza boxes and pledge T-shirts were stacked on tables; solo cups abandoned, but when I tried to move them for my picture, I found they were glued down. ??? I looked for the stickers Steph had stuck all over the place. Why were they there?

No food that we could find, so we moved to Antojitos for dinner. Seated upstairs at the rail, we could watch the dancers. My squash blossom quesadilla was delicious; Grant’s s fajitas ditto. I browbeat him into taking home the 3rd one for lunch. Big bowl of chips with salsa to start. I opted for salt, not sugar (!) on my margarita. $72 all together.

A fun night out, but I still didn’t understand Dead Coconuts. On Sunday, Steph stopped by and explained. The back story is that there is a sorority named the Koven, and the bar is their house. Upstairs is a dorm room with a secret door to the underworld. They are having a Samhain party for the pledges, and had we stayed, we would have seen the show where they sacrificed someone. Evidently actors dressed as college kids mingled in the audience then took over the dance floor for their performance. Next time.
