Tropical Storm Nicole

As Stephanie quoted from the internet, I would like to cancel my subscription to the hurricane of the month club. This time is was Tropical Storm Nicole, which came ashore at Daytona Beach, headed across the state, and dumped 6” of rain at our house. The yard is all soggy again. We mostly just lost more palm fronds. The wild lime and yaupon holly which we’d staked up after Hurricane Ian are now leaning the other direction. I told them they are on their own now. Our biggest mess is the arch on the north side which collapsed. I had already decided to remove it when I trimmed back the skyblue clustervine (Jacquemontia pentanthos) after it finished bloom this fall. We’re just going to stand it up as best we can for the nonce

While resetting the trellis, I realized with our arch removed and my neighbor's yellow tababua gone (a loss to the previous storm), we could consider putting in a tree on the northwest corner of the yard. Perhaps even a good sized oak. It’s time to have our landscape design updated. Unfortunately, Kirsten who created it, has moved out of state. Crossing my fingers that the local native plant nursery has found someone to replace her.

A Month of Garden Club

April seemed to be all garden club, all the time. I started with the zone leader’ walkthrough for Spring Fever on Friday, the 5th, then 2 whole days of that event. Whew. April 11th was the Windermere Garden Club’s monthly meeting, a field trip to Southern Hill Farm, a you-pick and wholesale blueberry farm. We were inspire to add blueberries to our garden. Friday, April 12th, I was the speaker at Bloom and Grow’s monthly luncheon, touting the value of becoming a citizen scientist, specifically, downloading the iNaturalist app and participating in the City Nature Challenge 2024: Orange County. I was pleased with my talk, the first one I’ve given in person in 5 years. I still attend EarlyBird Toastmasters, but we’ve been on Zoom since early 2020. Whew

Crisis averted? Every Thursday, I Zoom with 5 girlfriends, all 1967 graduates from Naples High. One I’ve known since early elementary school, perhaps it was first grade; the others moved to town by junior high. Sixty years of friendship. My high school class was the last under 200 graduates. We all knew everything about everyone, or at least we thought we did. In our last Zoom, at the very end, our most conservative and quietest member said, not once, but twice, “You all are too radical for me.” Wow. It passed without comment. We said our I-love-you's and goodbyes, but that stuck in my head. For her to say that was a big deal. What to do? I let it buzz around in my brain, several nights waking up and thinking about my response, because I knew I couldn’t just let it be ignored. This was an opportunity to deepen our conversations. Growth

It was the mosquito bite that was the one last pain that put me to weeping as I leaned against our bed, barely able to shuffle off to the bathroom. I was back to what I call T. Rex arms because I have to keep my elbows next to my sides to avoid sharp, stabbing pains. This is from having to lift myself up, rather than using my legs to stand. I tried using my walker, but my shoulders ache too much. I hadn’t found a place I can sit, and sleeping is impossible: I couldn’t lie on my back and turning from one side to the other was agonizing. I was a mess. And we have another damn set of screens out in the pool screen house. After more than 5 weeks of aching legs and a sore, but slightly better, upper back, I gave in and made an appointment with Kirsten at physical therapy and another one with my doctor. Thank goodness. I now have small exercises that relieve some of the pain in my legs, and which Kirsten says will strengthen my muscles and realign my pelvis. Don’t care how they work, I feel ...
