Walking

On the way back from visiting Mary, I changed planes in Dallas and walked almost as much as I did yesterday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (where I saw the platypus, my first). One and a half miles, and that included taking the Sky Link tram for part of my trapaise between gates. There were plenty of the complimentary golf carts around, but I had an hour between flights, so I decided the walk would do me good.

I had sat around all week, only going to the beach at Coronado, a late afternoon trip to the zoo, and the Safari Park. I’d been content to have Remi give me things and be really pleased when I returned them or sit and read books with Bella. The hummingbirds and lesser goldfinches were charming as ever. Plus it was too hot to do much outdoors anyway.

Ryan has been on a two month hiatus from surgery residency while he decided what his future in medicine looks like. Since he’d like to see his children and wife once in a while, surgery is unlikely with the ridiculous hours that entails. Anesthesiology or occupational medicine are two candidates. I pointed out the former was not patient intensive but was highly technical while the latter was more likely to be dealing with bureaucracy and personnel. Fortunately, the Navy has just restarted its mentorship program so he will have a knowledge person to guide his decision. Mary can help with the family aspect, but it’s good to have professional assistance.

I was able to buy upgrades on all of my flights to business/first class, which is spoiling me from ever flying steerage again. It did not prevent my having to sit near crying toddlers on the leg from San Diego to Dallas. I have deep sympathy for the parents, even though my noise sensitivity was on high alert. It may have been why my seat mate quickly knocked back 2 glasses of red wine. I may give noise-cancelling headphones another chance.

When we flew into Orlando, I recognized the giant Ferris wheel, glowing with neon, that is a couple of mile from my house. I’m not sure it quite feels like home, but it’s getting there.
